Brief Description: The Jane O'Brien Chatelain West Bank Regional Library, opened in 1990, is the largest public library on the West Bank. It is 35,000 square feet and houses fiction and nonfiction books, magazines, microfilm, videocassettes, and books on tape. The library contains a wide variety of fiction, nonfiction, and reference materials to meet the recreational and educational needs of the community. Materials not available on site can be ordered from other libraries within the Jefferson Parish Library system. Interlibrary loan services are also available.

The Reference area has been recently renovated and contains an extensive collection of reference materials, including computers with Internet access, word processing, and other software; online magazine and newspaper indexes; microfilm; Louisiana and general business resources; black history and other student resources; free WiFi access. Reference services are available during all the hours the library is open.

The Special Collections Room contains the genealogy collection (materials useful in tracing your family roots), Louisiana public documents, and the Louisiana collection (information about Louisiana, Jefferson Parish, and books written by Louisiana authors). The materials in this room include books, microfilms, and CD-ROMs. There are computers, microfilm reader-printers, and a copier available.

The Children's Department contains easy books for young children, juvenile fiction and nonfiction for older children, children's audio and videotapes, and a computer with a variety of software for children as well as Internet access. Regular storytimes are held Monday mornings at 10:30 a.m., and many other programs for children are offered throughout the year.

The West Bank Regional Library has a Teen Center that includes the following: A large collection of Teen fiction, magazines, CDs, graphic novels and audiobooks; Two Internet accessible PC computers available for teen use only;* Displays (monthly) of books and authors of interest to teens; Exciting programs for teens to attend!

Teen computers are available exclusively for teens from 1PM-9PM Monday-Thursday and all day Friday-Sunday with expanded hours during school vacations.

The Teen Librarian coordinates a solid group of Teen Volunteers that perform community service at the library. Potential volunteers may contact us for an application. You must be at least 13 years old to be a volunteer at the library.
