Description: The new Lafitte Library opened March 4, 2010, as part of the new Leo E. Kerner Jr. City Park Multi-Purpose Complex.
The library covers more than 4,500 sq. ft., almost three times bigger than the old facility. Its collection includes 14,000 items – all brand new. The library has 12 public access computers (the old facility had two computers) with shared seating for 17 people. Library users can sit down and get comfortable at new study tables and lounge seating and use the free wireless internet (Wi-Fi). Children have a play area with a small fishing boat. And, teenagers have their own spot with an old-time soda fountain-style booth. The former library building will be the new Sheriff Harry Lee Police Station. It was badly damaged by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and all of the library contents were destroyed. The Louisiana Library Association’s Disaster Relief Program awarded $20,000 to Jefferson Parish Library for rebuilding efforts at Lafitte. The funds were part of a $200,000 donation to Louisiana from the American Library Association.
